If once you realize who
you are and for what purpose you are here, then it becomes very easy to
achieve the ultimate goal of joining with the supreme power, of which
you are a part, through Dhyan, Samadhi. For this pupose, various yogic
asans and Kriyas play a very important role.
--- Swami Ram Pyara Ji Maharaj
Meaning of Yoga:
"Yoga" means Union. It is a union
of the soul with the ultimate spirit. In other words it means to join
yourself with that supreme power just like a drop of water in the sea.
This is possible only if you have a healthy mind andbody. Ashtang means
eight limbs and by the practice of the eight limbs of Yoga one can attained
the complete realization of all laws of existence. The first four limbs
are external and last four parts are internal. In spite of the fact that
yoga geographically originates from India, its ancient wisdom is universal
and eternal. The eight limbs are:
* Yama ( The five Abstinences) : non-violence,
non-lying, non-covetousness, non-sensuality, and non-possessiveness. Do
not perform bad karma.
* Niyama (The five observances): purity, contentment, austerity,
study, and surrender. Do good deeds.
* Asanas (Posture): The posturesused for meditation.
* Pranayam (Breath Control) Pra-na, breath, "a-ya-ma", to restrain
or stop i.e. control of the life force.
* Pratyahar (Abstraction): Turning the senses inward and withdrawal
from external objects.
* Dharna(Concentration) Fixing the mind on one object . At this stage
there is a feeling of three Object, self and connection between
both
* Dhyan Contemplation or meditation: Intense contemplation of the nature
of the object of meditation. At this stage there is feeling of two Object
and self
* Samadhi (Self Realization) merging consciousness with the object of
meditation. Immersed in the object, only objects of concentration like
a drop in the sea does not has own identity, it is by sea.
